The Avril family has been making wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the beginning of the 18th century and have long been one of the appellation's reference points for wine. The organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards comprise 35 hectares spread over 24 different plots. Six different grape varieties are used for the red and six for the white. Importantly and very much part of the Avril family's philosophy, only one red and one white are produced. The grapes are de-stemmed 100% and fermentation takes place in cement tanks for the red with ageing in foudres whilst the white is only aged in tank.

Tasting Notes

Lusciously textured with a focus on its tropical fruit, flowers, white peach, yellow citrus peel, almonds, apricot, and orange. On the palate, the wine is fresh, racy, and vibrant with a crispness to the fruits and an oily texture in the sweet finish. Made from close to equal percentages of all 6 allowable, white wine grape varietals. Drink from 2023-2035.

Press Review

"Wow, really expressive nose – honeycomb and Conference pear. Rich palate with plenty of freshness and a sense of sweetness too, lemon verbena and bergamot. Drinking beautifully now but will improve with time. Fresh and also has broad shoulders at the same time."
Jancisrobinson - 17.5/20

Press Review 2

"...outstanding, offering up scents of pineapple and tangerine, coupled with floral overtones. Full-bodied but clean and zesty, it's somehow plump and rich, but paradoxically light and refreshing. I enjoy these wines young, but proprietor Paul-Vincent Avril opened a still-delicious 2001 during this visit, so there is an argument to be made for aging this wine."
Wine Advocate - 95/100
